Bobby Bikes for Mayor Campaign Calls for an End to Joke Candidates in City Elections

Pittsburgh, PAAugust 2, 2005 — The Bobby Bikes for Mayor campaign is calling for a renewed commitment to seriousness and civic responsibility in Pittsburgh’s electoral process. As our city faces urgent challenges, from infrastructure and housing to climate resilience and public safety, our elections must be a space for real ideas and real leadership, not internet stunts.

Every election cycle, voters are subjected to the same tired spectacle. A fictional character named “Tony Moreno” is trotted out by anonymous online trolls pretending to run a mayoral campaign. This caricature mocks civic engagement and public discourse and is designed to distract and confuse rather than contribute meaningfully to the future of our city.

Just this week, a video surfaced showing a man portraying Tony Moreno standing in the middle of a roundabout, shouting incoherent complaints to no one in particular. The scene appears to be inspired by the “old man yells at cloud” meme. It was poorly produced and offensively authentic, an apparent attempt to mimic the behavior of someone struggling with both technology and basic civic understanding.

“This kind of content is not harmless satire. It is a mockery of our democratic institutions,” said Bobby Bikes, candidate for Mayor. “We condemn the Tony Moreno campaign and any effort to turn our elections into a joke. Voters deserve better.”

The Bobby Bikes campaign is committed to restoring dignity, clarity, and purpose to Pittsburgh’s elections. We call on the creators of the Tony Moreno character to stop clouding the upcoming election with ignorant nonsense and to respect the seriousness of the moment.

“Our city is at a crossroads,” said Bikes. “Let’s focus on real solutions, not fictional distractions.”
